Energizing Interactivity: ACR, Companion Devices and Augmented Reality
Automatic content recognition could greatly accelerate scaling of interactive applications and advertising. Augmented reality is gaining traction here and there. Companion device apps are a hot topic in service provider strategies. But in all cases there are practical issues that must be addressed if these innovations are to have the mass market impact that’s been missing in ITV. Ideas about how this can be done will be the focus of this discussion.

Manage and monetize your content with watermarking and fingerprinting
In the age of IPTV, online videos and tablets, content owners and broadcasters can distribute their content in many new ways. This development has the potential to increase the value of content, but it can also have adverse effects if the associated piracy risks are not tackled head-on. This paper shows how content identification technologies such as watermarking and fingerprinting can help the media industry to manage and monetise their valuable content. It covers established applications such as watermarking in pre-release and Digital Cinema and more recent applications such as watermarking for premium VOD. All these watermarking applications are driven by the major Hollywood studios. Fingerprinting is shown to be a valuable tool for internet monitoring of audiovisual content and for content filtering in online video sites. Examples of major sports events with their multi-million dollar broadcast rights illustrate the benefit of this tool. Lastly, content identification technologies are shown to drive new use cases such as "2nd screen", in which a smartphone or tablet app can synchronize with a TV program; one of the hot topics at this year's NAB show.
