Watermarking embeds an imperceptible data set into the content (Audio or video). Watermark data can later be extracted and interpreted. Forensic watermarking, serialization watermarking, transactional watermarking includes information specific to the particular transaction and/or individual. Fingerprinting is a technology to detect and identify a particular piece of content by analyzing the characteristics of the media. Fingerprinting generally does not involve modifying the content. The fingerprinting algorithm is applied to a given piece of content to get its (collection of) fingerprint(s). Then content found (Internet, Broadcast, Cinema, DVD…) can be compared to the source fingerprint.
